Training

For almost twenty years, The Hadwen Medical Practice has been involved in training doctors. Some have had a lot of hospital experience and come to us to train to become fully fledged GP's. These are the registrars, and usually stay with us for 12 months.
We also regularly have pre-registration doctors who have recently qualified (so-called foundation-year doctors) and they stay with us for 3 months at a time.
Drs. Remfry and Murphy are qualified as recognised trainers to work closely with the Registrars and help them learn about General Practice.
Dr Estelrich is the supervisor for the foundation year doctors.

From time to time the practice may have Medical Students gaining experience in general practice. Patients will be asked permission for a student in training to observe a consultation should the doctor be teaching a medical student during their consultation, or if they mind their consultation being recorded for training purposes. The doctors fully understand that some patients may prefer not to have another doctor present or their consultation recorded and will respect the wishes of the patient at all times.

The Registrar Year

Most GP Registrars spend at least twelve months with the practice. An introductory fortnight enables the new member of our team to meet everyone, including Health Visitors, Midwives and District Nurses and then after this the Registrar does morning and afternoon surgeries with ample time protected for one-to-one teaching, joint surgeries and visits. Every Thursday afternoon the Registrar attends the local VTS in Cheltenham - go to www.gpvts.org

More importantly there will be an afternoon off each week guaranteed!

Training and On Call

After the first month, the Registrar may undertake some day-time on call, covering Practice patients only, and fully supervised by one of the partners.

Practice Location

One of the interesting aspects of The Hadwen Medical Practice is that we have a surgery in the city as well as one in Abbeydale - a suburb of Gloucester.

Many of our previous Registrars have lived in Gloucester or Cheltenham, but some have made the most of our convenient location and chosen to live in one of the nearby Cotswold villages.
